My Org have 3 reports in PBI Service whic uses AWS Redshift as Data Source.
I couldn't create a cloud Gateway connection between PBI and Redshift due to security. and they have created an SSH Tunnel for this Connection.
How to connect this SSH tunnel with PBI and Redshift ??

Dataflow Timeout error

I have a dataflow which retrieves data from SQL Server. The result data is huge, it sometimes take more than 10minutes.
Even though I changed the Command timeout to 1hr, still the evaluation gets cancelled in 10mins. Any work around for this?

Hi,

Actually, all other dates in other places were fine - it was just Power BI.

The solution turned out to be for us to select a specific format on the column instead of leaving it as default.  Once we did that the display became consistent.

Hi v-xingshen-msft,

It's not possible through the "export as an image" ?

Why does total doesn't match when exported to excel from PBI?

Hello all,

I encountered one issue with export data into excel, need your advice please.

Issue:

1. The report is published in PBI service and I have a table for raw data dump (which accompany all the fileds from the table). I also have two card visuals that shows the total amount for column A and total amount for column B.

2. When the raw data is exported to excel (it has 24,270 rows) and the total amount on those two columns A & B are not matching with what is there in PBI, and question is why?

3. However, when I look at the total in the power bi visual for Column A vs Card Visual, they match. And same with Column B and the card visual, they match.

Why, when data is exported, those total do not match? It should be simple, exported data should match. Not sure what am I missing here.

Please provide some guidance to this, really urgent.

Sample below from power bi service:

Appreciate your time.

Thanks,

Power BI Gateway - Skip test connection -> Is the connection still tested somehow?

Howdy folks

We have an on premises gateway for my company and I am trying to set up some new connections to a cloud hosted database.

The instructions noted that I need to "Skip Test Connection" and my connection does get created successfully.

My concern though is that if I do "skip test connection" outside of creating a report and trying a refresh - How can I test the connection to ensure everything is working?

I tried to fiddle around and input for example an incorrect userid and I was actually then given the following error message

rodneyc8063_0-1720809528552.png

So it does look like some kind of initial connection test is still run even though I selected "Skip test connection"?

I would hope at a minimum that the database/credentials should have a quick test behind the scenes and this is what appears to be the case but just wanted to confirm if my understanding is correct?

What does skip test connection do then?

Is an initial connection established when creating a new source? So at least the userid/password can connect to the data source?

I dont want to be chasing around issues if I skip test connection and no error messages pop up.

Hope this makes sense and appreciate any insight

Hi @pthapa ,

I think it may be because of export limitations.

The maximum number of rows that Power BI Desktop and Power BI service can export to a .csv file is 30,000.

The maximum number of rows that the applications can export to an .xlsx file is 150,000. The actual number may be lower than 150,000 depending on query limits and visual types.

You can check it for more details -

Thanks,

Sai Teja

Hi @SaiTejaTalasila ,

Appreciate your quick response to this matter however the issue is not with the row limitations because I have 24K rows.

Thanks,

Hi @punitkhatri ,

You can try to load the data to dataflow and see if it works or not.If you are using gateway connections then restart your gateway and try to refresh it again.

Reducing amount of data I need to upload

I have a dataset that I will be updating everyday that consists of student enrollments and other variables I will need to slice by. I want to create a line chart that compares current day enrollment numbers to previous days numbers and the corresponding days from the year prior (2 lines).  It is a lot of the same individuals each day (within each year) but number of individuals goes from 150 on the first day to ~18000 by the last day. The updates would continue daily for over 100 days. This could make as many as 800,000+ rows by the final day of enrollments for each year if I have to stack each day's (current days and corresponding day from previous year) enrollments on top of each other each day.  I thought maybe I could reduce the number of rows (individuals) by creating columns for each day and using a binary observation. The issue is I need to use the day (100 columns) as the x-axis labels.  Is it better to bring in around 36,000 rows (18,000 for each year) and unpivot in power bi?

Yes, I added the index to the dataset. For some reason at first attempt data export, total didn't match and I tried again and again, now it is matching with the power bi visual.

Appreciate your advise.

Re: Issue with 'Fill Down' Column Appearing Empty in Power BI

Hey @fatimapz ,

I think that fill down works with all types but I guess I use it most with text data types.  And, do you put in the literal "null" or do you put in "" or do you put in " " when you are doing the custom column?

And then, if you are putting in an "x" then doesn't the fill down just put an "x" in every row then?  Since that is the one value that it is finding?

That said, in testing, I realized that I had to make the field blank and then I selected the column and replaced values of blank (nothing) with a "null" and then it worked.

Step 1:

And THEN when I did the "fill down" it worked:

PBI refresh error help

Hi All -

I'm new to this group, but wanted to see if anyone can help me figure out how to refresh a report that is in a DEV work enviornmnet.  I am getting an error and I'm not sure how to trouble shoot it.  The error is: OLE DB or ODBC error: exception from HRESULT: 0x8004E1D.

There was a problem refreshing. Cannot acquire lock for model because it is currently in use

My dataflows are acting more buggy than normal.

I've been trying to refresh a stand-alone dataflow all day long.  It always says:

There was a problem refreshing your dataflow. {"RootActivityId":"d68e57a4-07ec-3fd4-d8f3-2e94c4e7xxxx" "ErrorMessage":"Cannot acquire lock for model '861d221d-e2fe-43a4-a01e-8be2df05xxxx/24884407-c942-43ff-a6a4-eb372af6xxxx' because it is currently in use."}

This is a standard gen 1 dataflow in premium capacity, pointed at a web/REST data source.

Any ideas what this means?
I also hoped to get around the problem by renaming the dataflow and uploading a "fresh" one to replace it.

However that doesn't work for me either.

I'm opening a support ticket (probably my tenth in the past month).  This Power BI team must REALLY love hearing from their disrupted customers!  At this point I think they added all these bugs in there so that they can talk to me once a day.  I'm not sure why they want to talk to me so much... I'm not actually that interesting to talk to.

PowerBI snowflake connection using Microsoft Account not working

Hello everyone!

I used to connect Snowflake to Powerbi using the Snowflake option. Now, it's disabled because of company policies, but when I try to connect using my Microsoft Account, it shows the following error:

We verified that SSO for Snowflake connection is enabled, but I don't know what else to do. Any help is appreciated!

Re: Power BI embedded analytics - SaaS application - fix column width of a matrix

I thoroughly reviewed the solution provided, it does NOT work for me; the Values in my matrix are long text data with job and schedule information; I need them (the text) wrapped, and then have a fixed column width in my matrix; the column name lengths of my matrix are not as issue, they already have the same length (width), say, 4-Wed,Feb 21, '24, which corresponds to Week Day # 4, Wednesday, Feb 21, 2024 (this length of 16 characters obviously will not change for any date). I even tried the equivalent of the REPT DAX function method (shown in the tutorials) in my T-SQL dataset; but to no avail.
